Scott, if it makes the howling noise AS it is cranking the engine, suspect the reduction unit in the end of the starter (probably a wear issue or lack of lube)..
**  how does one repair this problem or lube it??

If it makes the howling noise AFTER the engine starts then suspect the upper roller clutch (it isn't a sprag clutch but is in fact a roller clutch), or the chain contacting something, or worn hub bushing/bearing..

**  NO it generally goes away immidiatley.

Worn starter reduction unit bushings are somewhat common on the older Wings.

The odd thing is it rarely does it while on the side stand. the thendancy for it to make that noise is when on the center stand?   Could this have anything to do with maybe the armature conecting better??? This is , like a wild guess.
It did it twice today while on the center stand, and then rode it to get some pictures of a national park nearby.
